Modern Bedroom Decorating Ideas Emphasize "Less"

October 13th, 2010 | Contemporary+Bedroom Articles | No Comments »

There’s a simple philosophy behind Modern decor: Less is more. Decorating becomes easier once this rule is fully understood but there’s more to a Modern design that removing clutter.

Modern decor relies on a streamlined vision. Furniture is sleek and comfortable. The color palette here is neutral, black and white. Accessories have a geometric quality to them, with sharp angles. Most of all, Modern design bases itself in the idea that space is a crucial element of the design. Everything gets stripped down to its most basic level, and then is given lots of room to show off its elemental beauty.

Follow these guidelines to make a bedroom come to life in Modern style.

First, remove the clutter. Keep only the absolute essentials – bed, dresser, nightstand. Focus on keeping a few pieces of furniture and a few pieces for accent. Remove everything that’s small, cutesy or collectible.

Measure the room -walls, floor space, windows, furniture. Draw a scale diagram of the room and then draw in where the furniture will go. This will save time and frustration trying to put a large, heavy piece where it won’t fit.

If you haven’t already done this, remove all the pictures and art objects from the walls and flat surfaces. Whatever color the walls may be painted currently, consider painting them all white, off-white or a neutral tone such as beige, cream or light tan. Plan to hang only one piece of art per wall as a focal point.

Modern style focuses on straight, clean lines, so consider this quality when selecting new bed linens. Remember, “Less is more,” and apply it to your choices. If you select a comforter with a bold geometric pattern, then choose solid color pillows to avoid having too much. If the comforter is a solid color, such as black, white, tan or other neutral, then find geometric pillows. For texture to soften the angles, add a plush throw in a contrasting color to the bed.

Place reading lamps on bedside tables or nightstands on each side. Streamlined black metal lamps often work well with this look.

Create a reading space by installing a Modern-style chair next to a window or in a corner set up for reading. A leather-covered club chair would be perfect, and these days this classic style chair can be found in smaller sizes meant for today’s homes. Add pillow to the chair. If necessary, a large leather ottoman that opens for storage can be set with the chair. This gives the occupant a place to rest their feet, a place to set a cup on a tray, as well as a place to store blankets or other comforts out of sight.

Finally, select a stunning area rug to complete the look. In fact, a good area rug can serve as a striking focal point for the room’s decor. Choose from among solid color rugs, geometric rugs or even shaped rugs to provide visual interest.

Now the crisp, clean, spare Modern design you had in mind has come to life in your bedroom.

Most of us can not afford to have a professional decorator design new rooms every time you rotate the decor. Usually, it is the mobile tire of, but what is above and around our furniture carefully chosen. Usually accent pieces, tents, or simply the color of walls that lose their freshness, making us bored with the whole room and have a great desire to redecorate. Here's an idea that is simple, inexpensive and appealing room last. This appliesto any room, but not particularly useful as the idea of decorating the bedroom.

Our rooms are private rooms in our homes and we spend quiet times, waking up and sipping a coffee, read or talk with our spouse. Lie on the bed. Standing in the doorway. What is the first thing you notice critic? And 'old photos you love, but tired of looking? Your quilt is beautiful, but you've had for years. In other words, find what weighs the eye downward. There may be many things, but chances are, not the furniture.

Bedroom Decorating Secrets

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Did you know that we spend a third of our lives in bed? That is why I believe that the bedroom is one of the most important rooms in the house…I think it ranks right up there with kitchen and bathrooms.

Your bedroom should be created around the very thing we use it for…I call it the three R’s… romance, relaxation and rest. Of course, there will be other functions performed in the bedroom, like dressing, watching TV, eating, reading, surfing the Internet and more.

First, consider all the functions of the room including what is the focal point of the room…in bedrooms it is the bed. Consider the style of the bed in relation to your design theme, and also consider the size of the bed in relation to the square footage of the room.

Of course, if you are working with smaller spaces, you may not be able to fit a king size bed into the room. Here are some questions to ask before starting your bedroom decorating:

- What is my personal design style or theme I want in my bedroom…formal, casual, contemporary, modern, Tuscany, Mediterranean?

- What will be the color theme of the bedroom… warm or cool colors?

- Who will occupy the room?

- What is the square footage of the room?

- What will be the furniture layout in the space?

- What other furniture will I need in the room… dresser, nightstands, armoire, bureau, chaise lounge, chair, desk, sofa or loveseat?

- What types of lighting will I need in the space…general lighting, task lighting and accent lighting?

- What kinds of bedroom accessories will I need for decorating the room?

- How many beds will be in the room?

- What style will the bed be?

- What size bed can I fit in the room?

Standard mattress sizes are as follows:

- Twin: 39″ wide by 75″ long

- Double: 54″ wide by 75″ long

- Queen: 60″ wide by 80″ long

- King: 76″-78″ wide by 80″ long

- California King: 72″ wide by 84″ long

Your bed is the focal point in the room and just as important as the furniture you choose. Your bed should resemble a work of art and must be highly decorative to create interest for the entire room. Focus on your comfort in the room… Remember the three R’s in the bedroom.

Consider the bed linen, sheets, bedspread, comforter, throw, dust ruffle or bed skirt and pillows while keeping in mind your personal style and color theme.

And you know you can never have enough decorative pillows on your bed! Pillows add interest; color, texture, pattern and design to your bed so don’t cheat yourself on the pillows.

The best furniture layout is to place your bed opposite of the entry door with the headboard against the wall. This gives added interest to the focal point of the room and directs the eye right to the bed.

Unless you have large spaces, try to avoid large four-poster beds because they tend to take up a lot of space both physically and visually. Try using just a headboard to your bed and not a footboard too.

Lay an accent rug next to bed considering color and texture. Next, select window treatments and furniture such as nightstands with table lamps for ambience.

Hang wall pictures with themes of romance and serenity. If the room allows, add a comfortable accent chair. Remember to never leave clothes lying around; this adds clutter to the space.

Perhaps with a more comfortable, inviting bedroom you’ll find yourself wanting to spend more time in there, and eventually getting more sleep, which is always a good thing.

Bedroom Furniture, Accessories, and General Decorating For Boys

July 15th, 2010 | Contemporary+Bedroom Articles | No Comments »

A common and age-old misconception we have about our boys is that they don’t care as much about trends, fashions, and style as girls. While their manner of expressing their feelings may differ, of course they care! Their rooms are their havens. Their rooms are their personal spaces where they go to unwind, relax, and be themselves. Boys take great pride in their bedroom furniture, accessories, and decorating. There are several things we can do to make sure their rooms reflect them and bring them comfort. To begin with, when decorating for your children, it’s always wise to go with neutral colors. Boys tend to prefer darker shades. The best thing to do is get your son involved in the creation of his bedroom. If it’s time to repaint, have him pick out the wall colors. If he needs new carpeting, give him some color choices. While boys may not as readily express their opinions about such things, they certainly have them. Sometimes you just need to ask. You’re safe with dark, yet neutral colors. This will match most bedroom furniture, and neutral colors allow for creativity in accessorizing.

When it comes to bedroom furniture, take inventory of what your son actually needs in his room. Typically, bedroom furniture for a child includes a bed, dresser, and nightstand. If you have some extra room to spare, many kids like to have chairs. And, of course, it’s always good to put a bookshelf in their rooms to encourage reading. Sometimes you can find bedroom furniture that serves multiple functions. Trundle beds work if you have limited space. You can also find storage pieces (such as toy boxes) that double as seating. The most important thing in finding bedroom furniture for your child is to pick items that are durable, and items that are neutral enough that they survive your child’s changing whims in tastes. For example, if you can find a simple wood framed bed, you might prefer that to the racecar model; the racecar model won’t last until he gets to college. If you can save your money on durable bedroom furniture, you can put that cash to accessories. Those are guaranteed to change throughout his adolescence.

The most important aspect to decorating a boy’s room is communication. If you talk to your son, and you include him on the process, chances are your efforts will last longer and save you money in the long run. Redecorating your boy’s bedroom will also give you a great opportunity to bond with your son and get to know his likes and interests.

Decorating the Feng Shui Way

June 13th, 2010 | Contemporary+Bedroom Articles | No Comments »

Reading the above title, you are probably already groaning. But take heart, this is not about packing a bunch of bamboo, samurais and gongs into your home, promise. Instead it is about creating an environment that is clean, filled with color, and has an instinctive flow to it.

Anyone that likes to decorate knows that if you put too much into a room, it can begin to feel uncomfortable to be in. The key to decorating with the principles of feng shui is less is more. It is just that simple. The true power behind feng shui is not in the objects you put in a room, but rather the colors you bring to it. Based on ancient principles that invite positive energy into a dwelling, keeping negative energy at bay, and inciting feelings with color, feng shui can be a fun and empowering way to decorate.

Colors form the foundation of feng shui, and colors should form the positive environment within your home. The first step of starting this method of decorating is also simple: get rid of the clutter. According to feng shui, clutter brings about stasis, any energy that would have been moving freely through a home gets caught up in the clutter and dies. Keeping rooms clutter-free also makes them seem lighter and more inviting.

Now, onto colors. In China, the colors red, yellow and purple bring good luck. These should be used in the first room that visitors would enter through, to draw positive energy into your home. Keep in mind that you don’t have to drown a room in a particular color, nor do you have to repaint or other major changes to accomplish this. The easiest way is to choose one prominent item in a room to use as a focal point for the color. In the first room, if you have a wall facing the front door, place a larger piece of artwork with one of the three colors dominant within it. Simple as that.

In other rooms, decide what feeling you want to inspire. Green is the color of freshness, peace and growth. Try a green throw for a piece of furniture, or decorate the room with plants. Just remember, less is more, and keep the clutter to a minimum. A great way to tie energies to a room is with contemporary area rugs. Think about that as you walk from room to room whether the change you want to make is just the rug.

Family areas should combine wood and water, or browns and blues. Bedrooms should have the colors of nature within them for peaceful rest and health. This is where you might want to use inexpensive oriental rugs and geometric rugs to anchor and tie the other rooms together into a single, vibrant flow. Decorating with feng shui is easy to do if you know what a color means, and how it can be represented. Use objects to represent colors, like plants, the veneer on furniture and artwork.

Contemporary Rugs – Home Decorating With Contemporary Area Rugs

May 15th, 2010 | Contemporary+Bedroom Articles | No Comments »

Got a room that’s crying out for a bright accent or a face lift? One of the quickest, cheapest ways to perk up your living space is with a new area rug. Not just any area rug, though. Today’s contemporary designs and styles in area rugs can add a bright splash of color to the décor of any room, from a traditional living room to the most contemporary of Danish Modern living rooms.

Choosing a contemporary rug for your home is a matter of taste. In general, contemporary rugs have bright colors, bold patterns and are made of easy-care materials like olefin, polypropylene, wool or cotton. Some things to consider when making a choice are the size of the room, the use it gets, the people who use it, and the mood that you want to set in it.

Living Rooms

Living rooms are the most traditional place to use an area rug. The contemporary design that you choose for your living room can do more than cover your floor. By choosing the right color and design, you can make your room seem larger, brighter, cheerier, darker or more formal. Here are some general rules of thumb to follow:

· Avoid large patterns if your living room is small. They make it seem smaller.

· Avoid busy small patterns in a large living room. They’ll make the room feel too ‘cluttered’.

· Choose warm, sunny tones to brighten a dark living room.

· Pick bright abstracts in primary colors to set off the stark lines of contemporary or modern furniture.

· Pick a border pattern to give a unified, ‘finished’ feel to a conversational grouping in a large room.

Children’s Rooms

Contemporary designs really shine in children’s rooms. Bright or pastel colors, simple designs and easy care fabrics make putting a rug in your child’s room a great way to make his private spot be his haven. Here are some suggestions for rugs for children’s rooms:

· Choose a rug made with polypropylene—one of the easiest materials to clean and wash.

· While you’re at it, pick a stain resistant rug, or treat your rug with a stain resistant finish.

· As tempting as it might be, avoid popular cartoon character patterns. Children’s tastes and favorites change rapidly. Instead, pick a bright pattern with colors that can coordinate with a wide variety of styles as your child grows and develops his own tastes.

· For fun, pick up a small area rug in a street or checkerboard design. Your child will spend hours playing on a street map with toy cars, or setting up checkers and chess games with friends.

There are contemporary rugs that are suitable for any room in your house, including patios, kitchens, bedrooms and family rooms. Shop around for the best deals on a contemporary rug that will brighten and warm your home for years to come.
